WHAT'S AT STAKE

The upcoming referendum directly impacts the essential services that define our district. Without this support, we face significant reductions that will alter the educational experience for every student in Porter Township.

1
PROTECT STUDENT TRANSPORTATION

Reliable transportation is essential for Porter Township students and families. Without referendum funding, school bus transportation times will either double, or school bus service will be eliminated.

MAINTAIN
SAFE SCHOOLS

The referendum will help maintain School Resource Officers, school nurses, and other essential health and safety initiatives.

In our rural community, emergency response can take 15 to 20 minutes depending on where emergency personnel are located. Having trained School Resource Officers already in our schools provides immediate support when emergencies occur.

3
RETAIN
QUALITY TEACHERS

Great schools depend on great people. Referendum funding will help Porter Township Schools retain quality teachers and staff and remain competitive with nearby school districts.

4
KEEP CLASS SIZES
MANAGEABLE

Manageable class sizes help students receive the personal attention and support they need from their teachers. Referendum funding will help protect staffing levels and keep class sizes manageable.

WHY IS ADDITIONAL FUNDING NEEDED?

Porter Township receives the 11th-lowest state basic grant funding per student in Indiana's FY2026 comparison. At $7,149 per student, we trail significantly behind the statewide average of $7,734.

That's $585 less per student than the state average.

THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY REDUCED SPENDING BY MORE THAN $700,000

Porter Township Schools has already reduced transportation routes, staffing through attrition, instructional support, custodial staffing, classroom and operational spending, and other expenses.

Those reductions have helped control costs, but they do not eliminate the district's long-term financial challenge.

New state tax changes create additional pressure.

SEA 1 provides property tax relief through new and expanded deductions and credits. Those changes also reduce property tax revenue available to Porter Township Schools.

Without additional action, financial projections show cash reserves falling below zero beginning in 2029 and reaching approximately negative $13.3 million by 2034.
